Districts in Manipur appeared deserted on Wednesday morning after 13 civil organizations announced a 24-hour bandh on Tuesday at 6 pm in response to the growing violence in the state.
On Tuesday, security forces killed ten suspected armed militants in an encounter, found the bodies of two civilians, and reported that six others, including three children, went missing in the violence-hit Jiribam district.
The bandh aimed to protest the government’s inaction in addressing the escalating violence in the state since Friday (November 8).
Khwairamband Market, the largest commercial hub in Manipur, remained closed from early Wednesday morning as bandh supporters enforced the shutdown in the market and surrounding areas.
Schools, colleges, and other educational institutions also closed, and public transportation disappeared from the streets of Imphal.
However, by 9 am, no bandh supporters were visible on the streets of Imphal city.Shanta Nahakpam, spokesperson for the 13 civil bodies questioned the state government’s inaction over the violence in the state.
He was referring to the casualty of a civilian in Sanasabi, Imphal East on Monday.
The incident, involving multiple pellet wounds, prompted Tangkhul civil society organizations to block the Imphal-Jessami road, but the government has taken no substantial steps to address the issue, he added.
