In Jammu and Kashmir, this marks the initial significant assault on an infrastructure venture. Big infrastructure developments have not been the focus of militants historically.

The security personnel have sealed off the vicinity following a terrorist assault in the Ganderbal district of Jammu & Kashmir on Monday, October 21, 2024.

According to police sources, heavily armed militants targeted a camp accommodating employees of an infrastructure firm close to Sonamarg on the Srinagar-Leh national highway in J&K with the intention of inflicting significant casualties.

Seven workers employed by the firm constructing the Z-Morh tunnel near Gagangir on the Srinagar-Sonamarg route lost their lives in the shooting incident.

The individuals named as Faheem Nasir from Bihar, Anil Shukhla from Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Shahnawaz from Bidgam in Kashmir, Mohammad Hanif from Bihar, Kaleem from Bihar, Sashi Abrol from Jammu, and Gurmeet Singh from Punjab were identified as the victims.

Sources reported that a minimum of two armed individuals arrived and began firing randomly in various sections of the camp where the workers were lodged, such as the mess area.

A police officer mentioned that the militants appeared to be well-equipped and occupied the camp office for an extended period. According to reports from the workers, the attack seemed to have been intended to inflict the highest possible number of casualties.

A group from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been reported by police sources to have reached the location to conduct forensic examinations. It is anticipated that the NIA will assume control of the investigation into the attack.
