On Monday, Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, emphasized that ensuring easy access to justice and providing equal treatment to all citizens, regardless of their status, is not only a priority but also a constitutional duty of the judiciary. Furthermore, he stressed that the judiciary must uphold this responsibility in order to foster a just and equitable society for everyone.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, sworn in as the 51st CJI, expressed honor in leading the judiciary and outlined reform plans.
“Judiciary is an integral, yet distinct and independent part of the governance system.
Moreover, it requires just and unbiased adjudication.”

Chief Justice Khanna highlighted challenges like reducing case backlogs, making litigation affordable, and simplifying legal processes.
The CJI aimed to adopt a self-evaluative approach which is receptive and responsive to feedback in its working, the apex court said in a statement.
“Making judgments comprehensible to the citizens and promoting mediation will be a priority,” it said.
With a focus on criminal case management, the CJI pledged to prioritise reducing trial durations, adopting a systematic approach, and ensuring that legal procedures are not gruelling for citizens.
He also highlighted the importance of promoting mediation as a means to resolve disputes efficiently, thereby ensuring timely justice for all. Moreover, he emphasized that such alternative dispute resolution methods could significantly reduce the burden on courts and contribute to a more accessible legal system.
As Chief Justice Khanna steps into his new role, he brings with him a vision of a judiciary that not only serves as a protector of rights but also functions as a service-oriented institution. In addition to this, he is committed to enhancing accessibility and ensuring the ease of justice for all citizens.
Earlier in the day, Justice Khanna heard 45 cases on his first day as the CJI. Following this, he thanked lawyers and bar leaders for their kind wishes and support.
He received a rousing welcome by the bar leaders, lawyers including former attorney general and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi.
CJI Sanjiv Khanna Sworn In, Succeeds Justice D.Y. Chandrachud
CJI Khanna took the oath in English “in the name of God”.
He succeeded Justice D Y Chandrachud who demitted office on Sunday.
Vice President Dhankhar, PM Modi, Defence Minister Singh, Law Minister Meghwal, and former CJIs Chandrachud and Khehar attended the event.
